Emergency Contraception (aka “EC” or “the morning after pill”) can stop a pregnancy before it starts. EC works by preventing an egg from being released during ovulation, making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus, and/or making it harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Because it prevents rather than terminates the pregnancy, EC is not the same as abortion. Use it sooner rather than later to reduce the possibility of getting pregnant, and usually no more than five days after unprotected or under-protected intercourse.
There are different kinds of EC, with varying levels of effectiveness depending on things like your weight and when you take it. Some Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) can be used as emergency contraception and can continue preventing pregnancy for up to 7-12 years. We can help you find the best EC for you, whether you need it right now or want to have it in your medicine cabinet for future use. Anyone (regardless of age or gender) can purchase any EC pills over the counter. The only exception is the EC pill called Ella, which requires a prescription and is more effective than other EC pills for people who weigh more than 165 pounds. But Ella may not work as well if you weigh 195 pounds or more. The copper IUD and IUDs with 52mg of levonorgestrel (Mirena and Liletta) are the only emergency contraception options proven equally effective if you weigh 195 pounds or more. IUDs are also the most effective form of emergency contraception for everyone, regardless of weight.

We conduct clinical breast exams and Pap tests to detect early signs of cancer. The need for clinical breast exams depends on your history and risk.
